This year, Architecture Day is dedicated to the theme The Solidary Society.
On Sunday 14 June, Arcam is organising two boat tours in collaboration with Rederij Lampedusa. In this tour, a guide who has immigrated to Amsterdam shares their experiences as a newcomer to the city.
The Tour
From the quay at Arcam, a special boat tour departs with a story that reaches far beyond the canals alone. In 2015, two boats left behind by refugees on the Italian island of Lampedusa were brought to Amsterdam. This marked the foundation of a shipping company with a mission: to become the most colourful, inclusive and welcoming in the city — and perhaps even in Europe. Whether that ambition has been achieved is for visitors to experience themselves.
During the canal tour, guides with roots in countries including Syria, Somalia, Eritrea, Colombia, Turkey, Egypt and the Netherlands take visitors through both their city and their stories. Through personal perspectives, Amsterdam is shown as a place that has been shaped for centuries by newcomers.
Immigration is central to this journey. The stories connect past and present and show how migration continuously transforms and enriches the city. The tour therefore offers not only a unique view of the canals, but also of the people and histories that make Amsterdam what it is today.
The tour starts at the quay at Arcam. Please arrive a little in advance, as the boat departs punctually.
