Theme 4 July
Sports and the City

With the Paris Olympic Games in sight, we will discuss the influence of sport on the design and planning of cities during the twelfth Barcam. This influence is multifaceted and extends from infrastructural changes to social and economic effects, and from sustainability to culture and identity.

Panel members:

Vincent Kompier, Urban Planner/Researcher
Vincent Kompier researched the space for sports in urban environments in his design research ‘Sport in the City.’ In the Netherlands, stemming from the CIAM philosophy, sports are often separated from other functions such as living, working, traffic, and recreation. This results in sports facilities often being hidden and difficult to access. Vincent shares his insights and ideas on how sports can be better integrated into the urban fabric.

Arjen Zaal, Architect at VenhoevenCS
Arjen Zaal is the project architect of the new Centre Aquatique Olympique in Saint-Denis, a multifunctional sports complex. This large swimming pool will serve as the venue for diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo qualifications during the Olympic Games in Paris this summer. Arjen discusses the challenges and innovations in designing this iconic sports complex.

Guido Schuurman, Urban Sports Architect, Atelier OUI
Guido Schuurman (Atelier OUI) helps create dynamic, sporty spaces that have a positive and inclusive impact on the city. As a sports architect, he has developed skate parks and freerun parks throughout the country. During the Barcam, Guido delves into the development of a temporary sports and recreation park on Strandeiland, which is set to be completed in 2025.
