Theme 3 October
Designing at the Fringe
The Havenstraat area, located behind the Haarlemmermeer station, is set to be transformed over the next few years into a vibrant mixed-use district. The development will include 500 residential units alongside spaces for creators, entrepreneurs, hospitality, and events.
But how can architects reimagine such transitional zones while preserving their distinct identities? This question will be explored in-depth through the example of VrijHaven, a case study in adaptive redevelopment. The discussion will feature prominent voices, including architect Thomas Ponds (Powerhouse Company), landscape architect Tom van Boekel (DELVA Landscape and Urbanism), Marijn van der Eyden (artist and member of ‘het Baaibuurt Collectief‘) and Leonie Wegertseder (Embodied researcher, former member of ‘het Baaibuurt Collectief’). The panel, led by the Barcam committee, will delve into the challenges and opportunities of maintaining the unique character of urban fringes while integrating new functions and design.
