Age-friendly Cities: Adapting to Ageing Populations
As the Dutch population continues to age, many cities and their built environments have remained unchanged. This presents both challenges and opportunities to reshape urban spaces to better accommodate older adults. In this Barcam session, we will discuss what it means for cities to become age-friendly and explore how cities should adapt to the needs of an ageing population.
Panellists
- Igor Sladoljev (Urban Planner and Research Leader at De Architekten Cie). Igor’s expertise lies in urban planning, architecture, and aging populations. From this perspective, he provides an introduction to the social and economic aspects of aging.
- Marion Mulder (Resident of the Akropolis Toren and Active for Stadsdorpen) Marion shares her perspective as a resident of an age-inclusive housing complex (like the Akropolis Tower) and her personal experiences on the impact of urban design on daily life.
- Armand Paardekooper (Partner/Architect at Mecanoo). Armand plays an important role in the development of the Cartesiusdriehoek, a new urban district designed by Mecanoo. Inspired by the so-called Blue Zones, the design aims to promote a long, healthy, and happy life. Although the project is still in the tender phase, it wins the first prize at the Blue Zones Festival in Zwolle in 2024.
