Crossing the IJ river: designing the East Bridge
Amsterdam is on the verge of a major leap across the IJ. Join the conversation about the future of the Oostbrug—more than just infrastructure: an icon connecting mobility, public space, and identity. Think and design with us on October 2 and help shape this urban landmark.
Background
The City of Amsterdam is set to receive two new bridges across the IJ, a critical component of the `Sprong over het IJ` program. This initiative was launched to enhance connectivity across the river in response to the city’s significant urban growth and the extensive new developments along the northern shore. With the capacity of existing ferry services projected to be insufficient to meet the increased transit demands in the near future, the construction of these bridges is a necessary step to support the city’s continued expansion.
The Oostbrug represents a major urban development initiative. Barcam extends an invitation to the design community to contribute to a project that is envisioned as more than just a piece of infrastructure. The objective is to design a bridge that serves as a vital transportation link while also functioning as an exceptional public space, a timeless landmark, and a structure embraced by all Amsterdammers.
The program for the design contribution will feature a lecture, a dedicated design workshop, and a review panel followed by an open discussion hosted by the Barcam committee and Michel Schreinemachers from NEXT architetcs. We look forward to your contributions and participation in this important project on October 2nd.
