Join us for affordable drinks and a short, focused program on a current theme.
Theme 4 June
The Winner Takes It All
On Thursday evening 4 June, the BNA Award for best building of the year will be presented. A week later, the AAP (Amsterdam Architecture Prize) follows. The perfect moment, then, to make architecture prizes the topic of this Barcam. You can also win three tickets to the BNA Award ceremony this evening — so make sure to be there!
In architecture, prizes play an important role: they offer visibility and legitimacy, and often open doors to new commissions and networks.
During this Barcam, we want to have a conversation about how we look at awards today. What influence do prizes have on our designs? How does winning an award change a young practice? And how can young firms position themselves within a landscape that is often already dominated by established names?
We’ll also look at how architecture prizes have evolved over the years — and how the rise of the internet has changed them. Who decides the winner, and on what basis? With:
- Margit van Schaik is an architect and researcher, and co-founder of Baltussen van Schaik. Since 2026 she has been appointed curator of architecture at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture.
- Stephan Petermann is co-founder of research and design consultancy MANN and editor-in-chief of VOLUME. As editor of the Architecture in the Netherlands yearbook, he selects the most significant buildings of each year.
Due to the BNA Best Building of the Year ceremony, the panel discussion at Arcam starts at 6:30 PM.
