The exhibition Building on Housing History: From Resistance to Renewal explores the impact of housing protests and policies on both historical and contemporary urban development in Amsterdam’s North, Southeast, and Nieuw-West districts. Taking visitors on a journey through each district, the exhibition highlights classical architectural history, past housing protests, and today’s lived urban experiences, drawing connections between these three narratives. By reinterpreting these stories, Arcam aims to showcase the richness and diversity of the architectural history of these districts, challenging the dominant narratives.

This wall-spanning exhibition brings together the outcomes of Arcam’s annual theme Hervertellingen (Reinterpretations). It will be on display at Arcam from November 15, 2024, for a full year.

Van historisch filmmateriaal tot audioverhalen

Newspaper headlines, posters, maps, and photographs bring the past and present of Amsterdam’s North, Nieuw-West, and Southeast to life. The podcasts From Tompouce to Baklava, Save Amsterdam-Noord, and Wouter Stroet’s series on eco-gentrification amplify residents’ voices, while historical images and personal stories offer insights into the struggles and transformations of these districts. In Nieuw-West, Soumeya Bazi shares residents’ experiences through audio stories, while in Southeast, personal narratives and historical film footage illuminate the social and architectural changes in the area. These elements bridge the past and present, showcasing the efforts of residents to build a better future.

The exhibition Building on Housing History: From Resistance to Renewal invites visitors to reflect on the complex relationship between architecture, housing protests, and policies.
