Designing Dignified Asylum Shelters
In many asylum centers, shared bedrooms are the norm. Residents often have no say in where or with whom they are housed. But what does this lack of privacy mean for refugees?
How does their mental and physical well-being impact their ability to learn the language or find work? And what are the consequences of living in limbo, without control over one’s own space?
In De Wachtkamer, Nanne Wytze Brouwer, Anneloes de Koff, and (former) asylum center residents with backgrounds in architecture explore how designers can contribute to a more just living environment for refugees and asylum permit holders in the Netherlands through small interventions.
During the Barcam, Nanne and Anneloes will briefly share some findings, followed by a discussion with experts and individuals with lived experience.
Panel speakers include:
- Anneloes de Koff – Architect, founder of Studio Antidote
- Nanne Wytze Brouwer – Freelance project manager & designer, founder of De Toekomstfabriek
- Saeed Jarrous – Architect at Gertemaker Algra Feenstra Architecten + expert by experience
- Joren van Dijk – Environmental psychologist
- Burobeb- Architectural firm working together with COA (Central Agency for Asylum Seekers)
After the panel discussion, attendees can order food at Arcam from the Holy Moly Pizza food truck.
