A forward-looking perspective to prepare for the future and reflect on the present

Atelier2100 is a future exploration of urban development in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region, carried out by the City of Amsterdam. Through different future scenarios, the long-term perspective of the region is examined and visualised.

Based on questions about, among other things, food, energy, biodiversity and drinking water, the project investigates which choices can already be made in the short term. This results in four future visions for the region:

The Improvisation Theatre: ad hoc cooperation. “What if we postpone major decisions, allow market forces to lead urban development, and give plenty of space to initiatives, the economy and growth? This leads to a dynamic but messy city and region.”

The City-State: Amsterdam does it itself. “What if major national investments fall behind and the city has to stand on its own? This leads to a hyper-compact, self-sufficient city with a pleasant, lively and water-rich public space in a calm surrounding region.”

The Triptych: Cooperation with the region. “What if we use growth as much as possible to develop thriving, self-sufficient cities in which growth is accommodated within existing urban areas? This results in three complementary, complete cities in an open landscape.”

Europolis: Cooperation within the Netherlands and Western Europe. “What if the national government and Europe steer towards activities that add value in the right place? The task for the Amsterdam region is to phase out linear, polluting and space-consuming activities and use the freed-up space for a sustainable leap in scale. This creates a climate-adaptive, connected metropolis between vast natural landscapes.”
