Barcam Architects Cafe #26 Art & Housing

Every first Thursday of the month!

Arcam

Barcam is Amsterdam’s monthly architects’ café, organised by and for architects and everyone in the construction sector in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Region, taking place on the first Thursday of every month.

This Barcam looks at the relationship between art and housing through the lens of the artist. By reflecting on leading projects, we explore how artistic practices become embedded in housing contexts. When is an artist involved, in what ways, and under what conditions? How is collaboration shaped, and how is the artist’s contribution valued throughout the process? A conversation on authorship, integration, and the dynamics between art and living environments.

Panelmembers:

  • Martijn Sandberg is an Amsterdam-based visual artist. In his work, he explores the relationship between the private and public domains, text and image, and architecture and public space. In 2020, Sandberg designed an integrated brick relief for the three gateways and the floor of Spaarndammerhart (Korth Tielens Architecten, Marcel Lok Architect). Through light and shadow, the masonry reveals the years “Anno 2020,” “1917,” and “3025.” These dates symbolize a journey through time, connecting past, present, and future. The artwork emphasizes the iconic architectural style of the Amsterdam School.
  • Anne van Schooten is an architect at Team V Architectuur and the project architect of De August, a social housing complex in Overhoeks. Here, architecture, art, and a sense of community come together in the garden designed by Kiki van Eijk. In addition, Team V collaborated with Martijn Sandberg on the realization of Mediavaert.
  • Caroline Coffrie is Advisor for Art & Culture at BPD and is committed to integrating art into area development projects. Drawing on her expertise, she connects artists, developers, and designers, with the aim of giving art a natural and lasting place within new residential and living environments. With a strong focus on context, collaboration, and social value, she supports projects in which art contributes to identity, quality, and the experience of place.
