Opening Exhibition ‘Peeping Spaces’ + Barcam

05.09.24

18:00—22:00

After a short summer break, Barcam will resume on September 5th with a special edition. We will open the ‘Peeping Spaces’ exhibition with a brief presentation by one of the curators, Rachel Refael. Afterward, during Barcam, we will delve deeper into the subject at hand.

Amsterdam’s Red-Light District, better known as ‘De Wallen,’ is one of the city’s most famous and controversial areas, often in the spotlight. During this Barcam Special, we will launch the exhibition ‘Peeping Spaces,’ a queer historical narrative about postal code area 1012. Following this, moderators Justin Agyin and Rachel Refael will look ahead to the future of the Wallen area together with designers and users.

Featuring:

– Gavin Oliver O’Leary (IRE)– Gavin is a researcher and designer of the ‘Peeping Spaces’ exhibition. By delving into historical narratives and archival media, Gavin uncovers hidden and often silenced histories of marginalized groups. He brings them to light by recognizing the importance of acknowledging the past to shape a more equitable future. Through his exploration of language and identity formation, he seeks to recognize and reveal spaces where these histories can be seen, shedding light on the interconnectedness of culture, history, and identity.

– Anna Torres- Anna is an artist, architect, visual storyteller, and spatial poet. Her work exposes the various power structures at play in (seemingly) public spaces, with a focus on gender, sexuality, and homosexuality.

– Phoebe Marsh- Phoebe is an archivist at the PIC (Prostitute Information Centre).

-Rachel Refael (CA)– Rachel is a researcher and curator of the ‘Peeping Spaces’ exhibition. She runs her multidisciplinary design practice, 166 BRUT Studio, focusing on spatial storytelling. Refael’s practice delves into thematic interests revolving around gender, sexuality, informal histories embedded in our living spaces, and our relationship (or lack thereof) to the environment.

– Justin Agyin- Justin works as an architect at Space Encounters. In May, he organized and moderated the Barcam on Queer Spaces.
