The Tour
Join a walk through Amsterdam’s first eco-district: the former site of the Municipal Waterworks in the Staatsliedenbuurt.
When the Municipal Waterworks announced in 1989 that they would be leaving the site, the question arose of what its new purpose should be. Local residents quickly advocated for an ecological neighbourhood: a green, park-like environment. This was not an easy task, as a large number of homes also had to be built—no fewer than 600 homes per hectare.
Kees Christiaanse (KCAP) designed the winning urban masterplan. A diverse group of promising young architects was selected, including Liesbeth van der Pol (Dok Architecten) and Neutelings Riedijk Architects, to create a lively and varied neighbourhood. At the same time, the consistent use of the same brick type ensures cohesion across the area.
During the walk, you will discover how industrial heritage and late-1990s housing come together here. You will pass sites such as Café Restaurant Amsterdam, the water tower, and the characteristic zigzag houses designed by Dok Architecten.
