LOCUMENT: Filmmaking, Architecture, and Urban Research
How can cinematography enhance the field of architecture and urban research? LOCUMENT, a filmmaking collective based in Porto, will share their approach to integrating film as a tool for architectural and urban analysis. Their methodology demonstrates how visual storytelling can offer fresh perspectives and contribute to research by design.
Currently, LOCUMENT collaborates with Architect in Residence Carolien Schippers, working in the Amsterdam region on a film that delves into waste and the landscapes and architectures that are shaped by waste management systems. The project sheds light on pressing spatial and environmental challenges that waste processing and containment practices create in and around the city.
As a research studio, LOCUMENT merges filmmaking with architecture and urban research, employing both disciplines as analytical, critical, and subversive tools. Their work highlights contemporary issues, examining them through the influential lenses of technology, economics, politics, ecology and the built environment. Their approach offers a dynamic way of understanding the rapid changes shaping our society today.
