7 March 2024: Books are just an excuse! Libraries as public buildings are more than just a home for books

What role do libraries play in the city and are these the last public buildings that are truly public and accessible free of charge? What value do these kinds of places have in the city?

On the one hand, we highlight the designer’s side. From what principles and vision of the future is a library designed? To what extent are developments in the function of libraries and the position that libraries occupy in our society taken into account? We also highlight the side of the library itself as an institution. For example, who doesn’t know the OBA? For over 100 years, Amsterdam residents have been coming to Amsterdam’s public libraries for knowledge, culture and information. The OBAs are lively and accessible places where many Amsterdam residents feel at home. How is OBA’s vision created and how is the future considered?

On March 7, Barcam will discuss the importance of public spaces and buildings such as libraries in the city from different perspectives and disciplines.
