Exhibition Amsterdam Architecture Prize 2024
Leading up to the festive award ceremony of the Amsterdam Architecture Prize 2024, Arcam highlights all ten nominations in an exhibition featuring photography and tactile objects. Get acquainted with the ten projects vying for the title of ‘best building in Amsterdam’ or learn more about the winners of the professional jury award and the public prize after the announcement.

About the Amsterdam Architecture Prize
What is Amsterdam’s best building? Every year, two juries—one professional and one public—recognise a design that in their opinion is the most inspiring building in Amsterdam. This year marks the 16th edition of awarding the AAP. Ten buildings compete for the prize annually.
Arcam and the Arcam Programme Council selected these projects from among approximately 110 buildings completed in 2023. We primarily considered architectonic and urban quality, programme, innovative typologies, progressive ambitions, distribution throughout the city, and whether the building makes a significant addition to the city.
Notable about the buildings that did not make the cut was their apparent underdevelopment and the predominance of spreadsheets and building envelopes. At a time when construction is becoming increasingly costly, homes are becoming smaller and the quality of materials, finishings, and outdoor and collective space is declining.
These ten projects demonstrate that it is possible to design exemplary, original buildings for (future) Amsterdam residents which cater to sustainability, quality of life, and affordability. The selection represents what kind of city Amsterdam should be: sustainable, fair, affordable, healthy, and beautiful.
We are seeing three trends. Circularity and reuse are a key aspect for office buildings and workplaces in the city. In housing construction, experimenting with efficient floor plans and new forms of living is prevalent. And in mixed-use projects, the opportunity for interaction with each other is an important focus.
