Model City Haven-Stad demonstrates the city of the future

Arcam reopens with a new, modular, and more inclusive exhibition design. As part of the gallery’s transformation, a brand-new multimedia installation narrates the spatial story of Haven-Stad, the largest urban expansion in the Netherlands and Amsterdam’s biggest expansion since IJburg

All major transition challenges in one

In some areas, residential construction can only begin from 2029 onwards, but in Sloterdijk, the construction of Haven-Stad has already commenced. Haven-Stad encompasses the current business area between Sloterdijk, Westerpark, and in the north, the Cornelis Douwesterrein and the Noorder IJ-plas. Throughout Haven-Stad, there is space for 40,000 to 70,000 residences. Due to the combination of living, working, water, mobility, climate adaptation, sustainability, and energy neutrality, this area serves as a model for numerous spatial challenges. What density will this program be realized in? Which functions can be combined and at what height? How is the water challenge addressed in the plans? Model city Haven-Stad showcases the plans for Haven-Stad but also serves as a model for many other area developments within and outside the Netherlands.

Inform and research

There is no design yet for Haven-Stad, but there is already a wealth of information! Through Model City Haven-Stad, you will become acquainted with the current spatial developments and challenges of the entire Metropolitan Region. Your exploration begins with urban planning, history, portraits of businesses in the area, or intriguing student plans developed over the years.

A large-scale model (1:3000) displays the area. Six sub-areas take center stage in the adjacent research station. Models (1:1000) provide a first impression of Hemknoop, Zaanstraat Emplacement, Cornelis Douwesterrein, Docks in Noord, a bridge landing, and the Houtveemloods.

Each sub-area provides background on a spatial challenge that has not yet been resolved. (How) will the bridge over the IJ land opposite Theater Amsterdam? (How) does the design of Haven-Stad connect with the Spaarndammerbuurt? How do we handle recent industrial harbor heritage? Where will the new public transportation station be located? Visitors can contribute their thoughts on possible scenarios and be inspired by reference images from other cities, the visions of students, or even entrepreneurs.
